This is your interpretation, Alexandre. There is another way to look
at the current state:

The current state is that if you happen to have the needed tools installed
and you simply update your tree, then attempting to compile by typing make
might cause several files in your source tree to be changed, without your
being aware of it.

If --enable-maintainer mode is the only way of preventing such automatic
updates to happen, then my vote goes for using it.

So, let me rephrase the question independent of whether you have the
tools needed:

    "Should people who simply update their cvs tree be required to enter a
    special command to cause updates to the Makefile.in's in their source tree?"

Basically, the question is: should we make kaffe development easier for
people who really know what they're doing or should we make kaffe development
easier for people who don't understand all the ramifications of automake.

My answer is that people who really know what they're doing don't count
in this context.
