If you have the recommended versions, they wouldn't be changed, since
at the end they'd be exactly the same. But I see your point.

Ok, your point is a very strong one, I don't have arguments against
that. It will be a minor inconvenience for us, developers, but a
potential major win for random potential developers. I'll throw away
the version checks and put AM_MAINTAINER_MODE in instead.
