Well, when I gave up, every platform was broken.

The problems Tim may have encountered may be due to the fact that an
old configure was there --- I've had that happen to me to after I
updated. So, the lesson is to

a) make sure no Makefile.in is changed compared to CVS
b) /bin/rm -rf your build tree
c) reconfigure.

Even without a tag, there is also the -D option in CVS. This at least
allows you check out a working tree and perform changes that you can later
merge in the trunk.
