oops. I was so upset I didn't even finish reading your email.
I don't care whether we check the automake stuff in CVS or not.
I am convinced that AM_MAINTAINER_MODE (at the very least) is the way to go
until automake becomes as established and stable as configure.
I'd prefer having to say "please rebuild the Makefile.in's"
Maybe print a warning or some such: "your makefile.in may be out of date"
or some such.

Hey, the only thing I dislike about automake right now is that it
flat out broke my ability to build a working kaffe. Is this an irrational
fear of new things? I dont' think so. Is this an unwillingness to learn?
I really don't believe so. I'll even ask our admins to update to automake
1.3.45.beta3-f if that's what it takes. I really just want things to work.
Like an OS that's at its best if it does not get in the way, a build
environment is best if it "just works".
