[xml] preventing libz?

I just downloaded libxml 2.2.2 source and am attempting to build it. My
system happens to have libz installed on it, but I do not want libxml to use
it. How can I configure the build to not use libz?

I have tried several options:

./configure --without-libz
./configure --with-libz=no
./configure --disable-libz

any thoughts?

I'm on Solaris 8.
