I'm not sure I really believe we've having this discussion yet again.
From TVT's point of view it Kaffe Desktop switch to Classpath then we
can no longer donate any code to it since for commerical reasons we need
to use out own source base (I don't care what you say about GPL and LGPL
- my Custom customers don't want to screw around with untested and
legally illiterate licenses). That would mean that a switch to
classpath would (a) set Kaffe way behind the Japhar/Classpath effort
since the integration of the classes with the VM would be non-trivial,
(b) you'd loose the 4 TVT employees currently working on Kaffe, and (c)
you'd end up with a worse version of Kaffe.
Now if you want to go off and build a version of Kaffe using Classpath
that's just fine - but don't check it in 'cause I don't want to see it.
Are you really saying that the solution to bugs in our libraries is to
throw them away and use someone elses - hey! if we have a bug in the VM
we should chuck that out too and use Japhar - what do you say !! :-)
I suppose we could fix those bugs - radical I know but what the hell.
I like competition - competition is a good thing- throwing away all
we've done because of the perception of someone elses work is
"better" (and I regularly look at Classpath's stuff and I don't think
it's better) is plain stupid. I'd rather beat them.
Bottom line is that I don't think we should throw away out libraries and
use classpaths - we can use 100% bits of their libraries for things we
don't have if you like - but I don't want to replace out stuff with
theirs.
I agree with Godmar - does their Japhar/Classpath stuff actually work -
I use Kaffe for all my Java related work, I run Swing applications,
office suites, Citrix Windows clients, web servers, compilers, and a
bunch of other stuff on Kaffe without a hitch. I'm not about to throw
that over for a complete untested and unknown.
So, lets give up on the "merging" once and for all shall we and try to
muster more support for Kaffe as the one reliable, open, integrated Java
solution.
Cheers
Tim
