That guy introduced int8_t et al (didn't he?), so we could just
replace those uses with jbyte and all would be fine. That's what I'm
proposing. Unless he's got very good reasons not to do it.

Huh? Since when has Kaffe ever defined/used int8_t et al? I can't
believe it did, because there are no related configure checks for
that, and they're unportable as hell.
