I would also be equally frustrated, except that I've been busy
tackling other more pressing problems at work...
I agree that tackling complexity with more complexity is the
wrong approach. The goal should be to *limit* complexity to
small, well defined little bitty buckets and then hermetically seal
them once they are "figured out".

How about this for a solution..
1. Form a CVS branch (call it "BRANCH_LIBTOOL" or whatever)
from the current head of the repository
2. Revert the head branch back to the old way
3. When/if Alexandre gets the libtool stuff working on BRANCH_LIBTOOL,
and we all approve of doing so, then merge in the improvements.
