Yep, I'm well aware of the problem. It is a feature, but not a
complete feature. In order to be complete, it would have to ensure
that relative timestamps are correct and, even there, there would be
room for problems, since not every time configure.in is checked in,
every Makefile.in will be checked in, since they may be rebuild, but
end up unmodified, so their repository timestamps would not be
updated.

automake calls that --enable-maintainer-mode, and it can be enabled
with AM_MAINTAINER_MODE in configure.in. If you really need it, and
it makes everybody happy, we can go for it, but I'd really prefer not
having to configure with --enable-maintainer-mode every time I want to
do some development with Kaffe.
Would you care to explain why you NEED it?
