Sounds reasonable, but I don't see much need for an image of the CVS
tree, since people could always check it out, or, if not, just
download the result of `make dist' and run `automake' to get the
development makefiles.

Well, assuming Tim currently cvs exports the CVS tree into some
directory and packs it up, the difference would be that, instead of
packing the directory up, he should run `./configure; make; make dist'
within that directory, and move the resulting .tar.gz into the ftp
tree. `make dist' may be replaced with `make distcheck' if he cares
for a tree that builds and passes all tests.
