Even though you've said this is orthogonal, if I may make my wish
known, then fixing the broken cross-compilation environment would be it.
automaking etc. should make this easier, shouldn't it?

Of course, you don't have to complete it, especially if you don't have
cross-tools available or use them; but since you'll be the one who'll
be the most familiar with the build environment for some (hopefully short)
time to come, it would be nice if you could give us automake illiterate
people a lead here.
