Well, I took his message as an offer to post them, which is almost the
same. Thanks for the search, I've just e-mailed him asking for the
patches. Hopefully, we'll soon have an automake/libtoolized branch.

Sure it does explain. It also explains why you didn't get as much
help as you might have gotten at that point. :-)
Just think of it: wouldn't you be annoyed if a message was sent in
private to Tim about a problem in Kaffe, Tim could not reply to it for
a long time, and you would have known how to fix the problem if the
person had sent the message to the mailing list?
Maintainers don't always have plenty of time to take care of packages
they maintain. That's why there are mailing lists and groups of
developers/contributors.
