Upon further investigation it appears that only XPointer is
adding new data types; XSLT and XQL are only adding new functions
to the expressions.
In the case were only new functions are added, it should be
sufficient to extend XPath by allowing registering of new
function names along with a callback function. This callback
function would also need access to the push and pop functions
of XPath. Does this look alike a feasable approach?
