[xml] Parsing errors always sent to stderr

As far as I can see the parsing routines send all errors to stderr.
This is not always appropriate as I could have been created by inetd and my
stderr will actually be a socket.
I can of course redirect stderr within the process but is there a neater way
of controlling the error printing?
