I would judge these apps to be defective. It's so easy to ignore non-
element content when you are just want to process the element
childs.

But I see the problem. From the alternatives you mentioned, I
would prefer the 'purist' flag. And overriding by xml:space. Or is
xml:space retired since Namespaces?
