Just FYI, I'm working on XLink at W3C right now. I'm also in the
process of adding XPointer support to libxml, so I definitely think this
should be investigated. However I'm not sure I understand completely all
the requirements of your linking mechanism, so I'm somewhat not able to give
a definite answer on wether XLink fullfills your needs
